AB: MI is the best team, ‘without a doubt’

Mumbai Indians is undisputedly the best IPL team in the world. With a record five titles, you know why. The Mumbai-based team ran through the Delhi Capitals in the finals of the 2020 IPL edition to clinch the title 5th time, twice in a row. No IPL team in history has achieved the feat.

Such a performance would obviously draw appreciation. Among those who hailed the victory was AB de Villiers. The South African congratulated MI, calling it the year’s best team “without a doubt.” AB tweeted, “Well done @MIPALTAN! Without a doubt the best team this year.”

Why did AB say what he said?

AB thoughtfully used the phrase, “without a doubt.” That reflects how well Mumbai Indians played right through the season leading up to the title victory. Mi entered the pandemic-hit season as the defending champions and the title favourite with a solid, well-oiled unit led by Rohit Sharma. The team gelled together, convincingly pulling off win after win in the league stage and beyond. With 09 victories and 18 points, it finished at the top of the league table

Here’s how it fared in the league stage:

MI took their performance to the next level in the playoffs. Here’s how they fared:

Qualifier 1 200/5 DC 143/8 Won by 57 runs
Finals  157/5 DC 156/7 Won by 05 wickets.

The title-winning performance makes MI the best IPL team in the world. AB just attested to it.

Why does AB’s remark matter?

AB is perhaps one of the most destructive players ever to play the game of cricket. Now retired from international cricket, he has been the batting mainstay for his national side, South Africa as well as his IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore. He has the unique ability to decimate bowling attacks with 360-degree stroke play, solid timing and lightning-quick reflexes.

AB is credited with the quickest half-century (16 deliveries) and century (31 deliveries) in One Day Internationals. Both milestones came in the same match against West Indies in 2015. He also holds the record for the fastest 150 in ODIs. AB is one of the select few to score 20000 plus international runs across all formats. He averages 50 plus in tests and ODIs.

When someone of his calibre and stature says something, we all take notice.
