The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now seeking a new foreign coach for the Indian team. As per the sources, the thought of bringing Anil Kumble back didn’t really impress most of the board members. According to highly informed sources neither Anil Kumble nor the board members are keen on this role either –
“Well, neither Kumble wants to return, nor the BCCI officials, other than president Sourav Ganguly, are too interested in him. The Board is looking for a foreign coach now. Kumble knows that he will have to face the same old team members (Virat Kohli and others in the team), nothing new, then why would he return? And moreover Dada (Ganguly) has recommended his name but other officials expressed their disagreement on it,” a highly-placed source in the board told IANS.
“VVS Laxman also will not be able to get the post. However, there’s still a month left, so let’s see what comes or some change of minds! Also look at Kumble’s record as coach, it is not that impressive. See what is happening with Kings Punjab in IPL,” he further added.
Sources say that India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour is also planning to apply for the post of Indian cricket team coach. After reports emerged, it was reported that the BCCI may recall former spinner Anil Kumble but there are reports that he may refuse the offer. And instead go with some foreign recruit, sources say!
Anil Kumble Not Interested to Coach Indian Team
Previously, Kumble was the head coach of the Indian team. In 2017, he decided to step down after reports emerged claiming some serious differences developed with Virat Kohli.
There was a bitter fallout that took place between Kumble and Kohli. Subsequently, Kumble proposed his resignation after the Champions Trophy final defeat against Pakistan. After Kumble stepped down, Kohli had prevailed upon the BCCI, to urge Ravi Shastri in as the replacement of Kumble.
It is reported that Sourav Ganguly had wanted Kumble to continue in 2017, despite Kohli’s reservations when he was a member of the BCCI’s Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC).
As of now, Kumble is within the UAE as head coach and director of cricket operations for the IPL franchise Punjab Kings.
