Manchester City are the side best placed to keep a clean sheet in Gameweek 8 according to the bookmakers, with a 51% chance of doing so when they visit the Veltins-Arena to take on Schalke. The Germans have failed to score in either of their last 2 at home in The Bundesliga, whilst Pep Guardiola’s side have shut out both Chelsea and Everton in their last 2 English top flight outings. Ederson offers a safe route into the Citizens’ rearguard and starts between the sticks for our side.
Ahead of their meeting at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday evening, Juventus and Atletico Madrid (both 36%) rank joint-second. Both sides are traditionally strong defensively, so a low-scoring game may be on the cards here. In their respective leagues, both have kept 3 clean sheets in their last 5 outings. Offering some attacking threat, we plump for both right-backs, with Santiago Arias (1G, 1A in 14 starts) and Joao Cancelo (1G, 2A in 13 starts) both available for £5.0m – the best prices on offer in both defences.
Barcelona (30%) complete the top 4 defensive prospects for Gameweek 8 when they travel to Lyon. Clement Lenglet was rested at the weekend, which seems to signal he will start on Wednesday night. Also priced at £5.0m, he offers the cheapest route into the Ernesto Valverde’s back line, which has kept 2 clean sheets in succession.
Our bench consists of cheap backup options, with Schalke’s Ralf Fahrmann (9%) providing goalkeeping cover, whilst Lyon’s Leo Dubois (14%) looks like the only £4.0m priced defender who will feature this gameweek and takes the second spot on our bench. Fahrmann’s clubmate Matija Nastasic (9%), formerly of Manchester City, completes our defensive selections.

A fearsome Argentine duo headline our attack, as Sergio Aguero just pips Lionel Messi to our captain’s armband. Both are deemed to have a 57% chance of scoring against Schalke and Lyon respectively, with Aguero notching 11 times in his last 10 outings, whilst his fellow countryman is also in good form with 9 in his last 10. Further adding to their potential is the poor defensive form of their opponents: Schalke have kept just 1 clean sheet in their last 9 games, whilst Lyon have only fared marginally better with 2 over the same period.
Speaking of Lyon, Moussa Dembele (31%) completes our strike force for Gameweek 8. Whilst the former Celtic and Fulham man cannot boast the same form as Aguero and Messi, he has still bagged 5 in his last 8, and is available for just £7.0m. With Lyon scoring in 17 of 19 home games in all competitions this term, the 22 year old could prove a shrewd investment come Wednesday.
In midfield, we double up on the Manchester City attacking juggernaut with the selection of Raheem Sterling (43%). The England star has been instrumental in helping City put 9 past Chelsea and Arsenal in the Premier League lately, with 2 goals and 3 assists in those games. Another important game awaits midweek and affords Sterling the opportunity to prove he can deliver consistently on the big stage.
Our other 3 midfielders all line up at Anfield on Tuesday evening; Sadio Mane (34%), Serge Gnabry (23%) and Kingsley Coman (23%). Liverpool’s Senegalese speedster has been back amongst the goals of late, finding the net in each of his last 4. That Bayern are without a clean sheet in their last 6 should give him confidence that he can continue his recent purple patch. Meanwhile, the Bavarian giants’ wingers should provide good value given their respective prices of £5.5m and £7.0m, with both managing 3 goals in their last 3 appearances.
Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey takes the first spot on our substitutes’ bench, with the Ghanaian international seemingly the best pick of the £5.0m midfielders. Fantasy managers feeling a little more adventurous could, however, plump for Schalke’s attacking midfielder Weston McKennie.
Good luck with your fantasy teams this weekend!
