EFL Championship Fantasy: Gameweek 2 Preview & Tips

The first round of games gave us plenty to think about, as the whole set of fixtures threw up several talking points, with all 3 relegated Premier League clubs losing, a cracker of an opener and wonder goals and howlers galore kicked off the 19/20 Championship season.

The Standout

A goal and assist for Leeds United talisman Pablo Hernandez (£11.5) will firmly put him in the minds of Championship Fantasy managers, living up to his lofty price tag. It was an all-round master class from the experienced Spaniard, and they will expect more of the same against Nottingham Forest this coming weekend.

Can You Afford to Ignore…

The promoted League 1 sides. All 3 sides, Barnsley, Charlton and Luton, avoided defeat, with Barnsley and Charlton taking all 3 points.

Barnsley captain Mike Bahre (£5.0) was instrumental for the only goal of the game against Fulham and could have netted twice himself in a game where the Yorkshiremen could have scored several times.

Charlton’s Lyle Taylor (£9.5) picked up where he left off last season, being a constant threat, and getting a deserved goal for his efforts.

2 of Luton’s 3 goals came from Andrew Shinnie’s (£5.0) set pieces that Middlesbrough failed to deal with, and both were scored by defenders, in Sonny Bradley and Martin Cranie (both £4.5).

It was a weekend for goalscoring defenders, starting with the season opener at Kenilworth Road, with, as noted, Bradley and Cranie getting on the score sheet. Birmingham’s Kristian Pedersen (£5.0), Swansea’s Mike van der Hoorn (£5.0), Charlton’s Ben Purrington (£4.5) all scored, with Sheffield Wednesday’s Sam Hutchinson (£4.5) scoring and assisting.

Is Aleksander Mitrovic the Best Captain for GW2?

Fulham received no welcome committee as they kicked off their Championship campaign last week at Barnsley.

They get ready to welcome Blackburn Rovers to Craven Cottage for their first home game, a team who also fell to defeat to a promoted club from last season. Fulham will want to bounce straight back in front of their own fans, and Mitrovic will very much be expected to make that happen.

Who to Avoid

Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper Keiren Westwood (£5.0) was sent off for a challenge on Mo Barrow outside the area, and will subsequently serve a one-match ban, meaning he will miss out on the home game against Barnsley at the weekend.

We can expect Cameron Dawson (£4.0) to step into the lineup.
