Delhi Capitals have been one of the most consistent teams over the past couple of seasons. Delhi reached the final in IPL 2020 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) but lost out to Mumbai Indians, who won back-to-back titles. However, this year, they have come back strong and look like one of the best sides on the field.
Delhi lost regular captain Shreyas Iyer to an injury before the tournament and then decided to hand it over to Rishabh Pant despite his inexperience. Pant has managed to do well and guide the team to the top despite a few questionable decisions.
Delhi have been one of the best teams this season and despite an injury to their regular captain this season and coronavirus issues, the side from the capital city have managed to play great cricket and stay on top of the table.
Before the IPL was suspended, Delhi played 8 matches, winning six and losing two and have a net run-rate of +0.547
Delhi Capitals Squad: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (C), Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Woakes, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, Lalit Yadav, Pravin Dubey, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Ishant Sharma, Avesh Khan, Steve Smith, Umesh Yadav, Ripal Patel, Vishnu Vinod, Lukman Meriwala, M Siddarth, Tom Curran, Sam Billings
Here is a SWOT analysis of the DC team based on their performances in this year’s IPL so far.
OPENING PARTNERSHIP: Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan have been fantastic at the top of the order for Delhi. Shaw and Dhawan have scored heaps of runs and that has helped Delhi post big totals and chase down others relatively easily.
While Shaw has scored 308 runs from 8 matches, Dhawan leads the charts this year with 380 runs from the same number of games. Both of them have hit three fifties each.
AVESH KHAN: Avesh Khan has really put his hands up this season and performed fantastically for the Capitals. His impressive bowling has allowed Delhi to go with one less foreign bowler and shore up their batting, which was dealt a major blow when Iyer was ruled out of the tournament.
RISHABH PANT’s CAPTAINCY: The Delhi side has shown no weakness as such till now. They have fired as a whole on most occasions. However, Pant’s captaincy at times has come under the scanner. It remains to be seen how he handles when more pressure situations arise.
PRITHVI SHAW: Shaw’s good form can find him a place in the Indian side for the T20 World Cup as the third opener if India at all sees KL Rahul as a middle-order player. With Dhawan and Rohit Sharma also in good form, Shaw could well be the No.3 to the other two.
MAIDEN TITLE: Delhi look like a fantastic squad and one that can go all the way this year. With other sides struggling with consistency, Delhi could find a way to win their first title if they continue to play the way they did before the suspension of the tournament.
PLAYERS BACKING OUT: With corona virus still a persistent problem and the IPL being held in UAE just ahead of the World T20, many players could opt out of the tournament. The Australians have been a bit sceptical about it and it could well mean the likes of Smith and Stoinis deciding to not turn up for the second half.
IPL 2021 is likely to return on September 19 and will be played on till October 15 in the UAE like IPL 2020. A total of 31 matches will be played in 27 days.
