MS Dhoni is no newcomer to IPL records. In a 13-year IPL career, he has played more games (204) than any other player and captained a team for the second number of successive games (85). He is just two dismissals away from 150 IPL dismissals as a wicketkeeper. If it happens, he will be the first wicketkeeper to do so. He could be completing 7000 T20 runs if he scores 179 runs in the forthcoming IPL edition. In the 2019 season, he helped himself to another record.
MS Dhoni hit his 200th six in IPL, becoming the first Indian to do so. The milestone came in a superb 84-run knock in 48 balls against the Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday, 21 April 2019. The innings featured 07 sixes from Dhoni’s blade, as the CSK skipper finished with a tally of 203 sixes overall. Despite Dhoni’s heroics, CSK lost the match by two runs chasing a modest total of 162. As of now, Dhoni’s total sixes in IPL are 216, the third-highest for a batsman in IPL.
Come Friday, 23 October 2020, MS achieved another milestone, again related to maximum IPL sixes. In the 44th match of the 2020 edition, MS hit Rahul Chahar over the fence to complete 200 IPL sixes as a captain. He’s the first captain to achieve this feat. This time, the opposition was Mumbai Indians (MI), and the venue, Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Dhoni had to come up in the order when CSK was struggling on 3/3 in 02 overs. He tried to consolidate the CSK innings and was looking good but perished on 16 soon after hitting his 200th six as a captain.
But who’s the leading six-hitter in the IPL? You guessed it right – Chris Gayle, the “Universe Boss.” He is way ahead of the rest with a tally of staggering 351 sixes in just 132 IPL outings. Gayle amassed 4812 IPL runs at an impressive average of 41.12. The second on the list is ex-South African batting mainstay, AB de Villiers. With a reputation for 360-degree hitting, AB has sent the ball flying over the fence 237 times in his 157 IPL appearances. Averaging 40.47, the modern-day great has 4897 runs to his credit, making him a prolific scorer in IPL.
With 216 Dhoni total sixes in IPL, the CSK captain occupies the third spot. He’s followed by two compatriots, Rohit Sharma on the 4th spot and Virat Kohli on the 5th. Rohit took 196 innings for his 214 sixes while Virat has hit 201 sixes in 185 innings. Note that, only these five batsmen have managed to cross the 200 sixes mark in the history of IPL.
