The IPL is known for incredible turnarounds and big-hitting innings. One of the biggest attractions to IPL is the sheer excitement of the match. Over a decade, IPL has set records and broken many. However, the thing that keeps the fans on their toes is the fact that despite a low score, the match could go either way.
That said, it does not necessarily mean that every match would turn out in the favour of the fans. IPL history has seen a fair share of extremely low scores and disastrous innings. Here’s a look at some of them:
1. Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2017 – Score: 49
Royal Challengers Bangalore is one of the most unpredictable teams in the IPL. Under the captaincy of Kholi, the team has hit some great scores. However, in 2017, the team lost to KKR while chasing a quite low score (131).
KKR could only manage to put up 131 after losing all ten wickets. The Gambhir-led team, however, turned the game around by taking out RCB at only 49 runs on the scoreboard.
2. Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2009 – Score: 58
Rajasthan Royals so far has only one IPL title under its belt. After its win in 2008, RR set a personal record of the lowest score by losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore. The match was memorable for multiple reasons. Firstly, Rajasthan Royals were chasing a target of mere 134 runs. Secondly, Anil Kumble, master spinner won the hearts of every fan with his 5/5 performance. RR was all out with 58 runs on the scoreboard in 15.1 overs.
3. Delhi Daredevils, IPL 2017 – Score: 66
Hailed as the underdogs, Delhi Capitals, previously known as Delhi Daredevils, is a collectively young team. With many talented young players, the team is the dark horse of the IPL. However, DC has its off days as well. One of the worst innings played by the team was in the 2017 IPL with a total score of only 66 runs against the champion team, Mumbai Indians.
Chasing the massive target of 212 runs, DC lost all wickets and just managed to get 66 on the scoreboard. Mumbai Indians took the match with 146 runs, which to date is the largest margin for a win in IPL.
4. Delhi Daredevils, IPL 2017 – Score: 67
Delhi went through a rough patch in 2017, consecutively losing games. Setting a record for one of the lowest scores in the IPL history for the second time in the same year, DC put up 67 runs against Kings XI Punjab.
DC was bowled out with just 67 runs on the board, Sandeep Sharma being the star-studded bowler for the match. Punjab’s openers, Guptill and Amla, chased the score with 12 overs to spare.
5. Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2008 – Score: 67
Back in 2008, KKR set the record for its all-time low score of 67. Playing against Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders succumbed to MI’s bowlers. The highest run-scorers for the match remained to be Agarkar and Ganguly with 15 runs each.
MI, on the other hand, had no problem chasing the score, wrapping up the match in just 5.3 overs. MI won the match with 8 wickets in hand.
IPL has seen a fair share of ups and downs. Many seasoned players have found it hard to keep their performance up to the mark. However, the incredible bouts of ups and downs are what keep IPL thrilling. With the possibility of a match going either way, IPL fans find it hard to keep their eyes on the matches.
