IPL 2021: ‘My Only Regret is Not Pushing Suryakumar at No 3,’ Says Gautam Gambhir

‘My Only Regret is Not Pushing Suryakumar at No 3,’ Says Gautam Gambhir

Former Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir regrets losing Suryakumar Yadav to Mumbai Indians, especially after having groomed the batsman for 4 years between 2014 and 2017.

Gambhir further calls the attention to the fact that Suryakumar has become one of the mainstays for Mumbai Indians and India as well within the short formats. Gambhir also mentioned that Suryakumar is now at his peak with the Mumbai Indians and he continues as one of India’s most important players now, especially when playing shorter formats such as T20s or ODIs.

In 2012, Suryakumar Yadav began his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians, but he only played one match for them before moving to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014. At KKR, in over 4 years, he got plenty of game time and played 54 matches!

However, Suryakumar was not able to score as much for KKR at No. 7 despite his recent success with MI. Gautam Gambhir regrets not using Suryakumar at 3 and had options for Manish Pandey or Yusuf Pathan during his successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders.

The only regret I have is not pushing Suryakumar Yadav at No. 3. There were players like Manish Pandey and Yusuf Pathan, and so we had to always use him as a finisher. A lot of players go on from one franchise to another. From KKR’s point of view, this has to be KKR’s biggest loss, letting go of Suryakumar Yadav,” Gambhir told Star Sports on Thursday.

He is someone whom we groomed for four years and then let him go and now he is at the peak of his career. Because we couldn’t give him that position (NO. 3), he was not able to get those 400-500 runs in a season, batting at No. 7.

Someone’s loss is someone else’s massive gain. And that is exactly what happened with Mumbai Indians. KKR let go of him and now he has become a mainstay of MI’s batting line-up,” he added.

Over the years, Suryakumar has made progress and become one among the key players for Mumbai Indians, having played an important role in their title wins especially during the last two seasons. He was bought by MI at 3.2 crore in 2018 and led his team to victory with over 500 runs scored in the current IPL season!

Suryakumar has achieved an outstanding record for himself and India by just recently coming off of 2 400-plus seasons. He’ll be looking to do it again in T20s, making him one if not the most integral member on this squad as they prepare at the forthcoming World Cup 2021 tournament.
