With the mega-auction scheduled, the picture is getting clear for expansion of next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and while they prepare for some big changes to come with it – like adding two new teams from outside sources that will be added from season six. Last week, the board invited tenders for purchasing these IPL franchises and ‘invitation to tender’ can still be available until October 5th.
Now reports suggest that the board has put forward six cities for the two new teams – Guwahati, Ranchi and four others as their options for two new teams considering business opportunities in mind. These other four cities are – Cuttack (all East), Dharamshala (North), Ahmedabad West zone with Lucknow Central Zone being another option which would also come from Uttar Pradesh state – home to President Ram Nath Kovind who is sponsoring this campaign!
The BCCI has plans to take the cash-rich league, which is popular across all regions in India and abroad. They are aiming for expansion by expanding into Hindi-speaking areas of the north belt where there is potential as many people speak that one language!
The BCCI’s decision to make it clear that no city from the south will be included anymore is frustrating for those who want their home state represented. With three southern cities already participating, Visakhapatnam and Kochi Tuskers Kerala should have been able to continue on as well without issue but litigation with the ex-Kochi side stopped this possibility in its tracks which has now prevented any future participation by teams hailing from Southern India.
The BCCI has gone the north, west and eastern way with their IPL tournament. To do this they have 65% of all four billion minutes watched coming from Hindi viewers in just that region! Rajasthan Royals are considered to come from a central zone based on cricket mapping so it’s no surprise why they’re expecting expansion beyond Delhi or Punjab where these two IPL teams reside currently for now but there could potentially be more matches played throughout India if things go well at first few editions.
Sony Ten 3, which is currently telecasting India’s tour of England was the No 1 sports channel in this county as it has been capturing 50.4 percent viewership when compared to other channels such as English and Tamil-Telugu who only fetch 10% each for their average share on total TV audience across all TVs during an event like a game or match between two countries.
The IPL team auction for two teams scheduled to play next month will start at a base price of INR 2000 crore.
