Former India captain Rahul Dravid was named the head coach of the Indian team which will be travelling to Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series in July. With most of India’s first-team players away in England along with regular coach Ravi Shastri for the World Test Championship and the following Test series against England, Dravid was named as the coach of a relatively inexperienced side led by Shikhar Dhawan.
Dravid is presently the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and also played a huge role in shaping Indian cricket’s future with his stints as an India A coach as well as the U19 coach. India won the U19 World Cup in 2019 under the coaching of Dravid. That team had the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill to name a few.
T Dilip and Paras Mhambrey will also assist Dravid in the Sri Lanka tour as fielding and bowling coaches respectively with the likes of R Sridhar, Vikram Rathour and Bharat Arun also in England with the India first team.
Dravid and Mhambrey were in line to be announced as a part of the coaching set up but Dilip’s inclusion comes in as a surprise. The 39-year-old is currently the fielding coach of Hyderabad and has worked with India A as well. He has been rated highly by the MSK Prasad-led selection committee in 2019 and has also completed a Level III coaching course.
The 20-member squad along with the net bowlers quarantined in Mumbai and left for Sri Lanka on June 27 following 14-day isolation from June 14. They are also likely to undergo a three-day hard quarantine after arriving in Sri Lanka and will have to stay in rooms only. That will be followed by a soft quarantine following which they will be allowed to practice, according to a member of the Sri Lanka Cricket.
With no preparatory camps before flying to Sri Lanka, Dravid insisted on practice for at least seven days before the first ODI on July 13. No practice matches have been scheduled but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have arranged for intra-squad warm-up games at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.
India are set to play three ODIs and T20Is each against the Lankans from July 13 to July 25.
