Whether batting first or chasing a total, a steady opening partnership is required. IPL has had its share of opening stands that contributed to the team’s cause. Here’re the top five of them.
1. Jonny Bairstow and David Warner:
When Bairstow and Warner bat together, bowlers run for cover. In the 2019 edition against Royal Challengers Bangalore, they teamed up to put together the highest opening partnership in IPL. Both were at their belligerent best, dispatching balls to the fence and over it effortlessly to put up a 185 run partnership in 16.2 overs. Both ended up scoring quick centuries and helping SRH posting 231 runs on the board. Despite its batting might, RCB lost the match by 118 runs.
2. Chris Lynn And Gautam Gambhir:
In a league match in the 2017 season, Chris Lynn and Gautam Gambhir went ballistic against the hapless Gujarat Lions at Rajkot. Chasing an imposing total of 183, the KKR openers were harsh on the bowlers from the get-go, hitting them to all corners of the park. Lynn was the wrecker-in-chief, finishing with 41-ball 93 not out, while Gambhir scored unbeaten 76. Thanks to their outstanding hitting, the otherwise imposing total was chased down in just 14.5 overs.
3. Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul:
K.L Rahul is all class but Mayank Agarwal is also no mug with the bat. Both had a terrific 2020 season with some remarkable performances. In a high scoring league match against Rajasthan Royals, the Kings XI openers went on a rampage, taking bowlers to the cleaners. With a flurry of boundaries and maximums, they put on 183 together, guiding KXIP to a colossal total of 223. Mayank finished with a century, while Rahul hit 69 in 54 balls. However, the Royals managed to chase down the total, thanks to some brilliant batting display by Samson and Tewatia.
4. Shane Watson & Faf du Plessis:
Chennai Super Kings had a forgettable 2020 edition, as they failed to reach even the playoffs. The prime reason was such a lacklustre performance was their openers’ failure to deliver a solid start. The only time Faf and Watson could stamp their authority was on 4th October 2020 against KXIP. Chasing 178 runs, the men in yellow showed intent right from the word go and put on a partnership of 181 runs, guiding CSK to a 10 wicket victory. Watson scored 83 and Du Plessis, 87. It is to this date the fourth-highest opening partnership in IPL ever.
5. Chris Gayle & TM Dilshan:
While opening for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chris Gayle put the Pune Warriors’ bowling attack to the sword in a way only he can. Gayle bludgeoned his way to a 175-run knock in just 66 balls, which to date is the highest personal score for a batsman in IPL. The Lankan opener Dilshan played second fiddle to the Universe Boss with a 36 ball 33. Together, they stitched a 167 run partnership, the highest opening partnership for RCB.
