Faf has played domestic cricket for teams such as Northerns and Titans. In addition, he has played matches for the Lancashire county club and Rising Pune Supergiant. His game approach and calmness made him a perfect fit to play international cricket.

Faf made his ODI debut in 2011 with a 50, and he continued this to the World cup steering his side to victory. In 2012 he made his Test debut and was the fourth South African player to score a Test century in a debut. He was later named T20 captain of South Africa versus New Zealand. Francois took charge of captaincy in December 2016 and accepted full-time captaincy in all formats of the game.

After South Africa won the ICC Test championship, he became an unshakeable figure in the South African line-up. He became one of the three most coveted wickets for the opposition, namely de Villers, Amla, and him. After a bad performance in Tests, Faf was dropped for the start of the England series in 2016. The same year his school friend de Villiers took over the captaincy from Amla.

Due to workload, de Villiers stepped down from his role in December. Faf Was believed to be the successor. He had created his run-scoring mojo and was filling in as skipper. De Villiers stepped down in the middle of 2017 as ODI captain, following a catastrophic champions trophy campaign. After de Villiers’ exit, Faf was appointed captain for all formats.

After being named captain, Faf scored his 6th century in the second game on October 2. His sixth century made him the 2nd cricketer to score centuries in all international formats as a captain. In the same game in Johannesburg, Faf was the first batsman to ever make centuries in all three cricket formats at the same venue. Until April 2018, he had obtained 17 centuries, Seven Tests, nine ODI, and one T201.

He is also the first captain to get a century in an innings of a day or night Test. He remained undefeated on 118 in South Africa’s innings score of 259/9 dec in the same game. In addition, on February 7, 2017, he got 185 runs in the fourth ODI vs. Sri Lanka. It was the second-highest independent record by a South African. And this lists him as one of the most renowned South African cricket players.

Although he announced his retirement in February 2021 from the Test, his achievements are evident. He is undoubtedly talented, and as he focuses on the ICC T20 world cup, may he continue his remarkable legacy.
