During the 2016-2017 season, Ruturaj managed to make his first debut for the Maharashtra Ranji team. However, his debut was shortened after an accident where he was hit with Varun Aaron’s delivery during a game against Jharkhand. He had to get surgery, which made him miss the Ranji season. After eight weeks of recovery, Ruturaj returned during the Vijay Hazare trophy, where he could only play one game. In the following season, he declared himself an ODI opening batter, scoring 132 off 110 in a match against Himachal Pradesh.
While playing for Maharashtra, he became their best batter during the tournament, where he scored 444 runs in the first seven games with an average of 63.
