Teams with the Highest Success Rate in IPL

IPL burst onto the scene in 2008 and went on to be the world’s leading league cricket event. Billions of cricket fans the world over eagerly wait for the next IPL edition to see their favourite cricketers in action. With the 2021 edition round the corner, we see the same passion again.

The tournament usually features eight teams based out of prominent Indian cities/states/UTs. However, not all teams are created equal. Some have been more successful than others. But which is the number one team in the IPL? Well, let’s discuss that in detail.

1. Mumbai Indians:

Mumbai Indians has to be the number one team in IPL, hands down. After all, it has lifted the coveted trophy a record five times in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 respectively. MI is on the verge of creating another record. If it wins the 2021 title, it will be third in a row. Out of the total 203 matches played, MI has won 118 and lost 81, accounting for a staggering 59.11 win percentage. Note that, MI’s win percentage is second only to Chennai Super Kings.

Mumbai Indians is owned and managed by India Win Sports, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited. The conglomerate bought the franchisee in 2008 for a record $111.9 million. Besides being the most expensive team ever, MI is also the biggest brand in IPL with a brand value of over 115 million. Currently, the team is captained by India vice-captain, Rohit Sharma and coached by ex-Lankan skipper, Mahela Jayawardene. Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai is its home ground.

2. Chennai Super Kings:

Chennai Super Kings has the records to be ranked closely after MI in terms of IPL success. CSK has to its credit three IPL titles (2010, 2011 and 2018) and the highest win percentage (59.83) among all teams. It has featured in 10 playoffs and 08 finals, making it the most consistent team. In 13 years of its IPL history, CSK has played 179 matches, won 106 and lost 71.

Bought by India Cements for $91 million, CSK is presently owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd. With $104 million in brand value, the franchise is the second most valuable brand after MI. Since its inception, CSK has been led by the legendary MS Dhoni while Stephen Fleming continues to be the head coach. The M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Bangalore is CSK’s home ground.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders:

Kolkata Knight Riders claimed the third spot with two title wins in 2012 and 2014 respectively. The team also holds a unique record for 14 wins on the trot in IPL history. KKR represents the blend of cricket and Bollywood, being owned by Shahrukh Khan (55%) and Juhi Chawla (45%).

With the iconic Eden Gardens as the home ground, KKR has one of the highest brand values at $88 million. Presently, it is led by Eoin Morgan while Brendon McCullum is the head coach.

4. Sunrisers Hyderabad:

If you had asked “which is the number one team in IPL” in 2016, the answer would be Sunrisers Hyderabad. SRH came into the IPL scene in 2013 when Deccan Chargers was dissolved. The Hyderabad based team finished as the champions in 2016 and continues to make it to the playoffs ever since. Led by David Warner, SRH is a serious contender for the 2021 edition.

5. Rajasthan Royals:

Lifting the inaugural IPL trophy in 2008, Rajasthan Royals made history under Shane Warne’s captaincy. But the franchise has ever since lived with the tag of an underdog.

6. Deccan Chargers:

The now-defunct Deccan Chargers was a successful team with one title in 2009 under Adam Gilchrist’s captaincy. The team was Hyderabad based, owned by the Deccan Chronicle.

While some teams in IPL have clinched the title multiple times, some are still searching for their first title win. But which team deserves the tag of number one team? Leave your comments below!
