The IPL has been a treat to cricket players and fans. If not anything, IPL has highlighted the sheer prowess of batsmen and raised the expectations from T20. The action-packed, fast-paced twenty-over matches are short-lived, which makes it even more exciting. What’s more, if you throw in a century by a batsman, the crowd goes wild.
Although centuries aren’t uncommon in the IPL, it is difficult to hit one. The thrill and wonder of smashing a 100 in an IPL are not just appreciated but also respected. With that said, here is a list of the top five century-hitters in the history of IPL (so far):
1. The King of 100s: Chris Gale
Chris Gale is the undisputed champion of 100s in IPL. His international reputation aside, Gale has catered a big-hitter reputation for himself. Leading the list of best 100-hitters, Gale has played 140 matches with 4950 runs and 6 centuries. His best innings stood at 175*.
2. The Talented Delhi Boy: Virat Kholi
The Indian and RCB skipper is known as the King of Cricket for smashing quick 100s in international cricket. His batting prowess in IPL is only second to Chris Gale, with 5 centuries in 199 IPL matches. With an average of 37.97, Kholi’s best innings stood at 113 runs.
3. The Go-Getter: David Warner
The Hyderabad Sunrisers skipper, David Warner, has been a go-getter from the beginning. His consistent performance has decided the fate of many games. With a batting average of 42.22, Warner has played 148 matches with 5447 as total runs and 126 as his highest score. Warner has four centuries under his belt, so far.
4. The Aussie Smasher: Shane Watson
Watto, now retired, had been a treat to all IPL watchers. The Aussie batsman used to play for CSK and share the field with Dhoni many times, taking CSK to victory. Sure-footed, he holds the record for hitting two centuries in the same IPL season (2018). The second 100 put him in league with David Warner with a total of 4 centuries in IPL. However, Watson takes fourth place as his total runs stand at 3875 and his batting average is 30.99 with the highest score being 117*.
5. The Fan-Favourite: AB de Villiers
Ab de Villiers is one of the most seasoned players in IPL and international cricket. Loved by fans and teams alike, de-Villiers has a knack for turning games around with class batting and exceptional fielding skills. That said, with an average of 40.77 in 162 matches, he has smashed a total of 5056 runs with his best score being 133*. In his IPL history, de-Villiers has hit three centuries.
Although the top five spots are reserved by veteran players at the moment, the new generation is catching up as well. Sanju Samson, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane and KL Rahul, with Rahul being the fastest-growing batsman, are catching.
