Afghanistan cricket has improved leaps and bounds recently and has produced some of the finest players in the shortest format of the games, who have gone on to shine in the various franchise leagues around the world and Fazalhaq Farooqi became the latest player to join the list. The pacer, who recently made his international debut, was roped in by three-time champions Chennai Super Kings to be their net bowler ahead of this year’s Indian Premier League, starting April 9 in Chennai.
Farooqi now joins the likes of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Qais Ahmed, Zahir Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to be involved in some of the top T20 leagues around the globe. However, Farooqi is the first pacer from the Afghan to make a mark with the rest of them all being spinners. Farooqi’s acquisition by CSK even for the nets will act as an encouraging sign for Afghanistan, which is normally known for its spin exports.
Farooqi’s selection as a net bowler with CSK was announced by the Afghanistan Cricket Board’s official Twitter handle.
“Young Fast bowler @fazalhaqfarooq6 left for India where he is roped in as a net bowler by @ChennaiIPL for the upcoming season of @IPL,” tweeted the official Twitter handle.
Fazalhaq Farooqi debut
Farooqi recently made his debut for Afghanistan, where he made his debut against Zimbabwe and picked up one wicket for 27 runs from four overs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Other than that, he has played 12 first-class matches, six List A games and two T20s, out of which one was his T20I debut against Zimbabwe. He has a total of 22 first-class wickets, six List A scalps and one in T20 cricket.
Farooqi, 20, was also a part of Afghanistan’s U19 team in the past and is an impressive, upcoming prospect from the country. Staying with CSK and bowling to experienced, world-class batsmen in the form of Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Faf du Plessis and others will be a huge boost for the youngster and the country as well. An impressive showing in the nets might well earn him a place in the CSK squad if anyone is injured or in the mega auction next year.
